TRAVEL RESOURCES

There are loads of companies, tips, and resources that you can use when planning your trip. Often it’s hard to know where to look first and what and who is reputable. Below are some of the companies that we use ourselves, are highly regarded, get top reviews and which are highly recommended.

 Airfares

There are so many places you can check for cheap airfares. Check a few of these out and consider going directly to the airline, as they can sometimes be cheaper as well as offer other fares not listed on the search engines. And once you’ve booked it … just leave it be! Airfares go up. Airfares go down. The right time is when you are ready!

Google Flights is an airfare search engine that offers a variety of features aiming to help users find affordable tickets. It allows you enter your departure airport and see flights all over the world in a map so you can see where the cheapest destination is. It also suggests different dates for cheaper flights.

Momondo finds and compares billions of real-time prices on flights, hotels and cars so that you get the best deals. There are no hidden fees or charges and the prices you see are never affected by your searches. It’s a really good starting point for all flight searches.

This website searches a range of different airlines, including many of the budget carriers that some of the larger sites miss. The news section of the website includes regular news from the travel and flight industry and travel tips for customers.

By working with a vast network of trusted global travel partners, Vayama accesses both published and negotiated air fares providing the very best international content all in one place. In addition, travellers who visit Vayama can browse thousands of hotels and book rooms at the lowest prices available, as well as rent cars all over the world.

CheapOair has helped budget-savvy travellers explore the globe at a discount price. They have access to some of the most innovative, intuitive technologies the travel industry has to offer. Whether you book right here on their website or use their award-winning app, one thing is for sure, CheapOair can help you save big bucks on your next trip.

TIP: When the time arrives to move from one place to another either by air, land or sea, look for local carriers as they sometimes have other connections and better deals. This can save you hundreds of dollars as well as keep you travelling for longer. In general, using a bus or train instead of flying can save you heaps of money as well as allowing you to detour and have some off the beaten path adventures. Also, sometimes buying separate flights can be cheaper than purchasing a direct one to your destination.

 Accommodation

Hanging out with the locals for free, hostelling it, the apartment of your choice, housesitting; what do you prefer? There is accommodation to suit every style and budget. You can mix and match!

Airbnb connects you with homeowners who rent out an entire house, apartment, a room  or even a castle, offering everything from basic to luxurious. In more than 65 000 cities and 191 countries, you will never be left without a place to stay. You’ll often get all the comforts of home and, in some cases, the chance to stay in a local, non-touristy part of town. You can often rent an entire apartment cheaper than a hotel room. (If you’re new to Airbnb, sign up and get $35 USD off your first stay. It’s on us!)

Agoda offers deals on a range of accommodation, flights and even entire holiday packages. It's a particularly good site for accommodation in Asia. They also have a great customer review section (over 15 million) to help you make an informed decision.

Booking.com is a great site for a variety of accommodation options, from hostels to luxury hotels and rooms. It's one of the largest and most used listing sites in the world offering some 123 000 destinations with more than 134 million reviews.

Couchsurfing allows you to stay in peoples' homes for FREE. It could be a spare sofa, shared room or private room. It’s a service that connects members to a global community of travellers. It’s a great way to meet locals who are willing to show you the local way of life, offering an alternative experience to a hostel or hotel. Each host has a profile. We recommend reading carefully before requesting so that your needs are met.  The site also offers events where travellers can meet up.

Hostelz.com lists and compares all hostels worldwide for FREE. It has the largest worldwide hostel database on the web. When you want to make a booking, the system searches and displays results from all of the major hostel booking sites so that you can choose the lowest price and the best availability no matter what. TIP: When we go on longer trips, or just don’t know where we will be from one day to the next (which often happens with us!), we don’t make bookings. We use a guide book or mobile app to take us to the area where the hotels are situated and then take a look around. You can often stumble across great places that aren’t listed anywhere and which are cheaper and better value. We have saved hundreds of dollars doing this.  More money for travel!

 Travel Gear

Travel insurance, backpacks, travel guides, credit card and identity protection; make sure you’ve got these covered!

One Planet makes backpacks and travel gear the way they used to be made … to last! These incredibly comfortable, well-made and tough backpacks are made in Melbourne, Australia. I bought one in mid-2014 and used it on a two and a half year trip around the world and it’s as new. This is my TOP CHOICE for a backpack. Having travelled the world for 30 years, this is the best backpack I have had, hands down. Their philosophy is simple: make it good, make it work, make it last. I really cannot recommend them highly enough!

People get skimmed all the time. I have been skimmed whilst travelling! And no, you don’t need to hand over your credit card or passport for it to be skimmed. RFID scanners can be used from a distance, storing your card details on an RFID chip. It’s that easy! Travel Guard eliminates that risk by blocking the threatening signals that put your card and identity details at risk. Once Travel Guard is placed in your wallet or purse it will protect all of your cards. Your passport details are also safe as it protects the chip on that too. We both use the Travel Guard card whilst at home and abroad! Get yours now!

Travel insurance has come a long way and you no longer need to purchase it or extend it in your country of origin. It can now also be purchased whilst abroad. World Nomads travel insurance is highly reputable, has great customer service, their prices are competitive and their coverage excellent. We agree with most of our fellow travel bloggers; do not leave home without it. Get yours now!

Chaco creates premium footwear and accessories for the outdoor-minded. They make simple, versatile products that provide superior comfort and durability. They believe that life is enriched through outdoor adventure, travel and community. We have been using Chacos sandals for 10 years now and we can honestly say that they are the best travel sandals EVER! Once you try them, you will never go back to wearing anything else! Get yours before hitting the road!

Some of us still like to carry around a hard copy of a guide book, or use one in conjunction with the vast online information available. Lonely Planet has a multitude of country and city guides as well as phrase books. They are also available digitally in the form of e-books (or chapters) as well as mobile apps.

TIP: Travel Insurance To take it out or not, that is the question! Let’s talk about the elephant in the room; the travel insurance that comes FREE with lots of different credit cards on the market. Do they all offer free insurance? No! But some do, and the cover really can be quite good. Find out if your card has free insurance and then contact the underwriter to find out exactly what is included if you need to pay an excess and for how long the insurance is valid for.

 Tour Companies

Our style is generally to do things ourselves. Organised tours, however, can provide you with that extra bit of comfort and security as well as with some insights and an understanding that you would not get otherwise.

Urban Adventures is a new style of travel experience for those who want to get off the beaten path and really connect with the local culture of a city or town. The experience can be as short as a couple of hours or as long as a whole day. Urban Adventures tours always take travellers to interesting places to meet locals and to really see what makes a place tick.

Intrepid Travel runs country and multi-country tours ranging anything from a couple of days to several weeks. We find the most ethical and responsible is Intrepid Travel and their ‘younger sister' Geckos Adventures, aimed at the 18-29 market. They both have small groups, use local tour guides, leave the smallest environmental footprint possible and travel, eat and sleep the local way.

TIP: Try and use local guides and operators as well as eating in places run by locals and sleeping in locally run hotels. This helps to contribute to the local economy as well as keeping the money in the community. It's a win–win situation!
